Interpreting
divider
Interpretation is the oral translation of a spoken text from a source language into a target language.
What information should I include in my query?
You will need to provide me with the following information for me to prepare a quote for you: date, length, and location of the event, subject, rough agenda, desired languages, number of participants requiring interpretation. Would you like me to organize the interpreting equipment, too? In this case, you will need to provide the following additional information: room size, available technical equipment.
How many interpreters do I need for an event?
Interpreters usually work in pairs, taking turns of about 30 minutes. Do you only need interpreting for a brief dinner speech or interview? In that case, it may also be possible to hire one single interpreter. I would be happy to help you find the ideal solution for your requirements.
How much does an interpreter cost?
As a rule, interpreters charge daily rates. These rates depend on a variety of factors, such as the subject discussed, length, desired form of interpreting, location. The rates not only cover the interpreting services themselves, but also the organization and thorough preparation of the assignment. It therefore is not possible to provide a flat rate. I would be happy to prepare a non-binding quote for you.
Note: Stuttgart is my professional base. When I interpret at your event in Stuttgart, you will not have to pay any travel or overnight expenses, but rather only the interpreting fee.
What is simultaneous interpreting and when is it used?
During simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter translates while the speaker delivers his/her speech. Special interpreting booths are usually used for simultaneous interpreting, allowing the interpreter to concentrate on what is being said, without any undesired background noises. Simultaneous interpreting with an interpreting booth is recommended for large and medium-sized events, and guarantees the best possible interpreting performance.
Other forms of simultaneous interpreting are interpreting with a tour guide system (e.g. during factory tours) and whispered interpreting. The latter can only be used for very small groups of one or two people needing interpretation.
What is consecutive interpreting and when is it used?
During consecutive interpreting, the speaker and the interpreter take turns speaking. The interpreter uses a special note-taking technique and translates the speech after short sections based on his/her notes.
Consecutive interpreting is suitable for negotiations, short speeches, or interviews. Please note that the discussion/speech will be twice as long as it would otherwise because of the consecutive interpreting.
What equipment must be provided?
I would be happy to organize the equipment needed for simultaneous interpreting. Depending on the type of event, an interpreting booth or tour guide system is needed as technical equipment. Also, the listeners of the interpretation will need receivers and headphones. Microphones should also be available for the speakers.
What do the interpreters need to prepare for the event?
For the interpreters to be able to prepare thoroughly for an assignment, the following material should ideally be provided, depending on the type of event: agenda, presentations, speeches, or scripts that will be used on the day of the event, as well as background information on the subject matter and/or event.
Translation
divider
Translation is the written transposition of a text from a source language into a target language.
What information should I include in my query?
You will need to provide me with the following information for me to prepare a quote for the translation of your text for you: number of words or characters, source and target languages, topic, text type, desired delivery date.
What format should I make the texts available in?
The texts should be provided in an editable format, i.e. ideally as a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file.
How do you calculate the text volume?
My calculation of the text volume is based on the number of standard lines. A standard line consists of 55 keystrokes, i.e. the number of characters including spaces divided by 55 equals the number of standard lines.
How much does a translation cost?
The price of a translation, i.e. the price of a standard line (see above), depends on several factors, such as the subject, target language, text volume, and desired delivery date. It therefore is not possible to provide a flat rate. I would be happy to prepare a non-binding quote for you.
How fast can you translate my text?
This of course depends on the length of the text. Since I work with an efficient team of colleagues, I am also able to handle urgent orders with larger translation volumes. However, it is always better if you inform me of your translation requirements in good time so that I can plan accordingly. In the case of short texts, it may be possible to deliver the translation on the same day.
Will my text be translated according to the “two-man rule”?
Upon request, your text will be translated according to the two-man rule. For translations into English, I always recommend opting for the two-man rule, i.e. I have the translation reviewed by one of my colleagues. I would be happy to advise to help you find the best solution for your text.
